Sustainable Islands

As a non-profit organisation based in the Maldives, Sustainable Islands (registry number: T/2015/22/15), was registered in 2015, and strives to protect and preserve the unique environment, culture, and communities that make the islands so special. We are committed to conserve the natural beauty of the islands with a focus on environmental conservation and support economic growth by fostering a sustainable future for the Maldives.

In the context of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives, sustainable development is not just a choice; it is a necessity for survival and resilience. SIDS face unique challenges due to their vulnerability to climate change, limited land resources, and fragile ecosystems. Sustainable development in SIDS seeks to strike a delicate balance between meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

In the Maldives, sustainable development takes on a particular urgency. As a nation composed of low-lying coral islands, the Maldives is acutely vulnerable to rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and climate-related hazards. The preservation of the Maldives' pristine marine ecosystems, rich biodiversity, and natural beauty is not only crucial for its citizens' livelihoods but also for the sustenance of its tourism-dependent economy.

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) can play a pivotal role in the sustainable development of the Maldives. NGOs can bring together expertise, innovation, and grassroots engagement to tackle pressing environmental and social issues. In this context, Sustainable Islands is committed to be an important stakeholder in supporting sustainable development in the islands.
